From dissipation to Doppler thermometry: control and sensing tools for Rydberg atom experiments

Rydberg atoms have become popular in recent years as a versatile physical platform for implementing quantum simulation and quantum sensing. In my talk I will present some recent results on measuring and controlling dissipation in cold Rydberg gases. While this work was mainly motivated by our efforts to study nonequilibrium phase transitions and quantum percolation in such systems, we found that Rydberg atoms are also useful for Doppler broadening thermometry, allowing us to perform spatially resolved temperature measurements, as well as for revealing position-momentum correlations in non-thermal samples.
