Computational Electromagnetics – Field Formulations, Numerical Methods, and Practical Applications

Jasmin Smajic - ETH Zurich, Switzerland

In the first part of the talk, the author’s view on the theoretical and methodological basis of computational electromagnetics and field simulations in general will be presented. This part of the talk will contain results related to low- and high frequency electromagnetic field simulations using Scalar- and Vector Finite Element Method, Boundary Element Method, Multiple Multipole Program, and their hybrids. Several interesting industrial applications of the presented simulation methods will be shown and explained in the second part of the talk. The practical part will include lightning impulse modeling of transformers, very fast transients in high voltage switchgears, multiphysics simulations of circuit breakers, simulations of plasmonic sub-THz antennas, photonic crystal devices, and electro-optical modulators.
