Enhancing Applications of Variational Quantum Gate Sequences

Despite excellent progress in hardware developments, available quantum computers only offer limited quantum resources. Hence making the most out of these resources is a key goal in the development of near term applications. I will discuss two projects of my group in that direction. The first aims at finding gate sequences to simulate non-equilibrium time evolution with fewer gates. The second aims at solving combinatorial optimization problems with fewer qubits than binary variables in the problem.
